We finally arrived on Colonsay after a 5am start this morning and a candy floss sunrise passing through Tarbert. Our journey took us via Port Askaig and onto Kennacraig glimpsing Islay and the Paps of Jura. Our first stroll took us to the local store ‘the best wee shop in the Hebrides’ just to stretch our legs. Today’s adventure was the Scalasaig Explorer a three bog on Walk Highlands I should have known better! We hiked up to the Lord Colonsay monument and then up to Beinn nan Gudairean on the ‘old road’ to bag the Trigpoint, bog, boggy and bog was the theme. We found some standing stones but they didn’t work. Back onto the road and a boggier, challenging stretch across the moorland to find the ruins at Bonevah and the remains of the old fishing village at Riasg Bhuidhe. I definitely put my navigation skills into practice which took us over a one sided stile and I became attached to a barbed wire fence and ended up in someone’s garden although the guy was cheery and seemed well impressed as to what we had hiked through! Finally back to the road and dinner plans at the hotel! Hmm I ended up with a pink risotto and am currently downing a Pig’s Paradise in front of the fire. A long day doing what I Iove best hiking through 6.5 miles of bog and looking like a drowned rat on the ‘gem of the sea’!
