Our Sunday on ‘the gem of the sea’ started with a whistle stop tour of the main island road, encountering stubborn sleeping sheep on the single tracks, historical cemeteries, hunting for standing stones, chatting to alpacas and exploring beaches. We stopped at Kilchattan where there are ruins of a chapel amongst the tomb stones and war graves. The local standing stones seemed to be a no go on farmland and so we headed to Tobar Fuar a pleasant sandy beach where each of us wandered with our thoughts under big blue skies. Next stop was Kiloran Bay, we just walked through the river with a ’to heck with it let’s get our feet wet’ to access the beach and wander slowly along the golden crescent. We had planned a longer hike today to include the Trigpoint on Carnon Eon, we still clocked up a few miles, but the travel, injuries and weather had caught up with some of us, so today was a rest day. Sometimes you just have to listen to your body and slow down and there is no place than to do this on a remote western island in the inner Hebrides.

Colonsay you are the gem of the Hebrides.
