Today I got into my head a bit, but pushed myself and tried not to let it spoil my day. We did two local walks today, the Beinn Ghuilean circuit, which we nearly had to turn back from as a bunch of cows were guarding the gate by the reservoir. However a local man and his dog were headed our way and he said to follow him, the cows didn’t budge so off we went up to the viewpoint which was pretty steep, but with the reward of an excellent vista above Campbeltown.
Most of this route is on MTB tracks and is quite boggy. Our next adventure took us to Davaar Island being careful with the tidal times. The island has a mile long causeway only passable at low tide, caves to explore and a Crucifixion Cave. The image was discovered by a local fisherman in 1887 who thought it was the work of a miracle, however it was done by a local artist Archibald MacKinnon who said the image had come to him in a dream.
In the cave there are memoriam stones at the base of the painting and an aura of peace and reflection, a place to remember your loved ones. We detoured back and continued onto the northern point of the island passing the lighthouse and hiked up to the bloody Trigpoint doing a total loop of Dunvaar. It was a total slog, undulating and steep, but we were rewarded with cracking views over Loch Campbeltown and the town.
