I headed up to Caithness for the weekend and Saturday’s first destination was Whaligoe Steps, 330 steps down to the harbour inlet and is a bit of a calf killer! It is one of the least inaccessible harbours you could imagine and is a reminder of a different time and a harsher way of life in the history of the fishing industry.

Our next stop took us to the Hill of Ulbster to bag the Trigpoint, the hillside is a former WW2 RAF radar station and there are still a few military buildings dotted about housing sheep skeletons. An easy Trigpoint to bag with cracking views!

The main hike of the day was the Castle Sinclair Girnigoe and Noss Head circuit. This was an absolutely stunning coastal walk along parts of the John O’Groats Trail and is narrow in parts and I had trouble getting over some of the stiles 😆

A little boggy and a very strong headwind, the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. Castle Sinclair Girnigoe is considered to be the earliest seat of the Clan Sinclair earls of Caithness and the site comprises two castles dated 15th and 17th century. Sadly the ruins are closed off due to unstable masonry, however I was lucky to see round the ruins a few years ago. It was a stomp back to Staxigoe along the road as the sun set and we were lucky enough to bag another easy trigpoint at Noss Farm. 8 miles walked so starting to build up my mileage again! Sometimes the smallest adventures make the best days out!
